Supreme Court strikes down Texas abortion law

As hundreds of abortion-rights supporters outside the court cheered, the U.S. Supreme Court Monday struck down a Texas law which justices concluded placed a “substantial obstacle” in a woman’s path to have an abortion.

In a 5-3 decision, the justices brushed aside arguments the Texas law was medically necessary to protect a woman’s health by requiring a doctor performing an abortion to have admitting privileges at near-by hospitals and insisting abortion clinics have hospital-like surgical standards.
